Summer reading

"On and off"

1. What seemed to you powerful, engaging, or enlightening about this piece of writing?
The author is clear in stating his interest in the university’s department and pulls us in with a story from his childhood. We as readers get a good sense of where his interest comes from and why it drives him.

2. What, for you, makes it an essay?
My definition of an essay is very broad, I just accept any piece of writing addressing a particular subject as an essay. This piece of writing easily meets that criteria.

3. Would you call this a personal essay? If so, why? If not, what subcategory of essay would you put it in? (Feel free to invent a title for a subgenre if need be.)
Yes; the author is talking about his own personal interest in a field at the university. We are given insight into his motivations and thoughts.

4. What’s your favorite sentence in this essay?

“Although my ruminations did not provide immediate explanations, they spurred my imagination and fueled my fascination for electronics.”

  1. Yo Sam that's great! Quick question tho - why do u like that sentence so much? Is it something about the flow of the sentence, or rather the use of some vocabulary that was so intriguing?
